Teacher charged with DUI in fatal wreck that killed 2

BARROW COUNTY, Ga. — Authorities said a local teacher is facing DUI charges after she ran a red light and killed two people.

The Walton County School District confirmed Meghan Caldwell, 24, is on administrative leave.

Police said she spent six hours in the hospital Saturday morning before she was arrested and charged.

"I am so sorry. I wish there was a magic power that could erase back to early Saturday morning and just change it all," said Rita Reed about her younger sister, Cathy Moore, of Flowery Branch. %

Police say Meghan Caldwell, of Loganville, ran a red light along Highway 316 in Barrow County, killing two people.

Speaking of her death, Reed said there's no room for blame, just prayer.

"I don't want to be the one to point fingers at anybody because we've all in our lifetime made mistakes and should have thought before we done,” Reed said.

Barrow County authorities said Meghan Caldwell, a Loganville High School teacher, is charged with DUI and vehicular homicide after she ran a red light Saturday morning, hitting and killing Moore and her passenger, Bradley "Scottie" Atha.

Atha’s sister told Channel 2’s Rikki Klaus that he was a good guy, but did not want to speak on camera.

Another passenger, Joseph Martin, was critically injured.

The wreck happened at the intersection of University Parkway and Patrick Mill Road around 4 a.m.

Caldwell was driving a Kia Sorento, while the three victims were in Moore's Mustang headed north on Patrick Mill.

Caldwell, who is listed by Walton County Schools as a language arts teacher and JV women's soccer coach, is now on administrative leave, while signs of mourning mark the spot where two lives were lost.

"All I know is I don't have my little sister anymore. My brothers don't have their little sister anymore and this other family, they don't have their sons or husbands or brothers. You know, everybody has just lost," Reed said

Until the investigation wraps, a Walton County Schools representative said they won't have other comment on Caldwell's teaching status.

Atha's sister is trying to raise money to pay for his funeral and gravesite, which she says amounts to $7,000. She said both their parents died before Atha turned 19, and he didn't have life insurance.
