Woman caught in crossfire of shooting near Atlantic Station says bullet was inches from her head

ATLANTA, Ga. — For the first time, we’re hearing from a woman who said she was caught in the crossfire of a shooting that left two young boys dead.

Channel 2 Action News first reported that six people had been shot near Atlantic Station on WSB Tonight on Saturday night.

Zyion Charles, 12, and Cameron Jackson, 15, both died after sustaining gunshot wounds on the 17th Street Bridge near Atlantic Station Saturday night after a dispute broke out. Police said they believe that Jackson was targeted in the shooting.

Channel 2′s Audrey Washington was near Atlantic Station Thursday, where Rebecca Walden showed her a bullet that lodged near the passenger side of her boyfriend’s truck, just inches away from her head, as shots rang out that night.

Walden, a hairstylist, said she’s still processing what happened.

“I mean, what are kids doing in the street at 8 o’clock at night with guns?,” Walden said. “They’re just kids.”

Walden and her boyfriend were on their way to a show Saturday when they heard the shots.

“And then a thud into the car, and I just went down, and Von said, ‘We’re hit!,’” Walden said. “I said, ‘What?’ If we hadn’t been in his truck, I’d be dead, because the bullet came right behind the car near my head.”

Atlanta police released surveillance video Wednesday of a group of teens leaving Atlantic Station on a MARTA train. Police said they believe two of the older boys were the shooters.

Police believe Jackson was the intended target and a bullet accidentally struck and killed Charles. Four other young people were shot and survived.

Walden can’t believe she came so close to being one of those victims.

“And that fact (is) that gunshots were going everywhere and it meant nothing to them. Nothing,” Walden said.

Walden said there were hundreds of young people in the area at the time of the shooting. There is now a $10,000 Crimestoppers reward for anyone with information that leads to an arrest.
