SWAT standoff ends peacefully, 1 person in custody

Officers respond to SWAT situation in Atlanta.

ATLANTA — A SWAT standoff in southwest Atlanta is over hours after people were urged to stay in their homes.

Officers were called to barricaded gunman in the 300 block of St. John’s Avenue in Atlanta around 9 a.m.

The caller said a family member was having a mental health crisis and that he was threatening to harm his family and himself.

Authorities told neighbors to stay inside their houses during the standoff.

After unsuccessfully negotiating with the suspect for several hours, police said SWAT officers moved in.

As officers attempted to take the suspect into custody, they said he resisted and was Tazed before being arrested.

There were no injuries and the suspect was transported to Grady Hospital for assistance and treatment.

Charges are pending.
