Southwest Atlanta Checkers fails health inspection

ATLANTA — UPDATE: The restaurant was re-inspected and now has a 99.

A fast-food restaurant in metro Atlanta was leading customers to believe it had a near-perfect health inspection score.

The busy Checkers restaurant on Donald Lee Hollowell Parkway in southwest Atlanta failed a recent health inspection and then misled customers. Checkers is a double drive-thru chain restaurant that is popular for items such as burgers, fries and shakes.

On May 27, the Checkers on Donald Lee Hollowell Parkway received a score of 60 on its health inspection.

One customer told Channel 2's Carol Sbarge that was surprising because the place is always packed.

When Sbarge went to the Checkers, she was surprised to see a year-old score of 99 posted. It is a violation to not post the current score.

Within a few minutes, Sbarge noticed someone in the restaurant had removed the score.

Violations on May 27 included all surfaces throughout the restaurant not kept clean, dishes washed without a sanitizing step, and precooked meats stored in a hot holding unit that didn't work.

The manager had no comment and advised us to call the corporate office. We did and are waiting to get a response.

This Checkers was just inspected a few weeks ago and, while it passed, it only got a score of 76. It'll be reinspected again this month.
