Metro Atlanta High School theatre company asks for help funding conference trip

ATLANTA, Ga. — A metro Atlanta high school’s theatre company needs help with its Cinderella story.

Channel 2′s Berndt Petersen talked to Maynard Jackson High School student actors Minnah Dunlap and Meghan Lewis know how to deal with drama.

“We’re like, oh no. The vultures are circling. Everyone is like, ‘Duck and hide.’ I think we’re all ready to face our problem,” Dulap said.

They’re members of the Maynard Jackson High School Theatre Company in Southeast Atlanta selected to perform at the International Thespian Festival next month in Indiana.

“It’s a really big deal. You don’t really see too many kids who look like me doing theatre. I think it’s really important,” 11th-grader Tyeshia Cloud said.

Forty students will take the trip, which will cost $90,000. But just this week, a $20,000 donation fell through.

“The show must go on. One thing I can say about my students is they have developed grit,” Theatre Director Adrienne Edwards said.

Edwards says they’ve switched back to full fundraising mode. Time is very short.

“Everyone is taking a chance on us, and we’re gonna give it a shot,” Lewis said.

It’s an opportunity to perform in front of talent agents and audition for professional acting schools. They don’t want to miss it.

“Just got to get there. It’s exciting. It’s gonna work,” Dunlap said. They plan to perform Cinderella at the festival, and they don’t want this Cinderella Story to end.
