Mercedes-Benz stadium roof construction picks up steam

ATLANTA — Construction crews are facing new challenges as roof construction picks up on Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

The retractable roof on the future home of the Atlanta Falcons requires 40 million pounds of steel for support.

The project manager says the crew prays every day before getting to work.

“You need to stay focused on everything you are doing and you will live a long time,” he said.

The crew is using the biggest American crawler crane to work on the steel skeleton.

Workers soared 300 feet above the Atlanta skyline, putting together the first of more than 100 truss installations.

They will move onto the upper part of the roof later this year.

The new stadium should be ready by June of 2017.
