Men use large gun in robbery at luxury Atlanta building

ATLANTA — Atlanta police are searching for two men in connection with an armed robbery in a luxury apartment building in Atlantic Station on 17th Street in midtown.

Surveillance video from May 4 shows the two men walking into the building and into an elevator, where they held up the people inside with a pump shotgun. The men got away with a duffel bag, police said.

Residents in the building said the experience left them feeling unsafe because, traditionally, a key-fob is needed to get anywhere in the building, including the parking deck and elevators.

Channel 2's Tyisha Fernandes spoke to a witness, who thinks the suspects waited for a car to go through the secure gate and then snuck right in.

"I'm screaming and I'm like, 'Oh my God,'" said a witness, who didn't want to be identified.

The witness told Fernandes that she and her boyfriend watched a movie at the Atlantic Station Theater. They walked home underground around 10 p.m. when another man walked into the elevator ahead of them.

Just as the doors were closing, police said, the two suspects stopped it.

"He reaches for the other guy's bag. He's like, 'That right there' and he goes and snatches the bag," she said. "The other guy is kinda like 'What? What are you doing?'"

Police said that's when one of the suspects seemed like he was about to pull the trigger.

The suspects then took the black duffel bag police think they were looking for and ran.

Owners of the building sent Fernandes a statement saying that they hired a company to audit their security system and said that they'll do whatever they have to to make sure this doesn't happen again.

Police are still investigating what was in the stolen duffel bag, because they believe the victim was targeted for the bag.
