ATLANTA — MARTA says the transit agency will start collecting fares again on its buses as well as allow front door boarding starting on Monday.

MARTA suspended fare collection in March to minimize interaction with their drivers because of COVID-19.

According to a news release, MARTA says it has invested about $250,000 in new bus features to help protect the health of their drivers and riders.

“At the onset of this health crisis, MARTA implemented operational adjustments such as rear door boarding to limit contact between operators and customers. Our most recent safety measures, installing bus operator shields and air filters, allow us to return to front door boarding and onboard fare collection,” said MARTA General Manager and CEO Jeffrey Parker.

The transit agency said it has added polycarbonate shields around bus operator cabs, antimicrobial air filters that clean the air on board, and mask dispensers to all of its 539 buses.

MARTA said it will continue to hand out masks at their rail stations and bus bays. The agency said it has handed out about 459,000 masks to date.

To help speed up the boarding process and limit interaction with others, MARTA is asking that people have their fares ready when they board the bus.

The agency said every passenger will be required to pay the fare and wear a mask beginning Monday.

“We are grateful to our customers for continuing to mask up and social distance, and we remain committed to making MARTA a clean, safe place for everyone who relies on essential transit service,” Parker said.
