ATLANTA — From drop-offs to trade-in programs, it’s easier than ever to declutter your house and get rid of older items.
But you should ask yourself how much could the old electronics sitting around your house in your closets and cabinets be worth?
If you’re looking to make some money to kick off 2025, Channel 2′s Linda Stouffer has some ways that you can start by looking around the house and gathering up all of those old electronics, then making a profit.
Everything from phones to tablets to gaming consoles and devices can be sold or traded in instead of sitting there gathering dust.

Consumer Advisor Clark Howard said it’s a good time to do an electronics cleanout.
“So what happens is old electronics become forgotten about,” Howard said. “They go in a drawer, they go in the closet, they don’t get any better with time.”

There are plenty of places that will take your used electronics, so Channel 2 Action News decided to check some of them out.
Online, there’s Amazon Trade-In. All you have to do is log into your account and see if there are offers for things you own. Sometimes you can get Amazon gift cards or a promotional discount for a new device.
Best Buy also has a trade-in program. If you go to the electronics retailer’s stores with your old devices, they’ll be evaluated and you can get a store gift card back.
Blog “Making Sense of Cents” says Decluttr is also an option, and one of the best places to sell your old gear, calling the process easy and hassle-free, then letting you get paid by either direct deposit or over PayPal.
Another option are what are called Eco-ATMs, which let you drop off your device at a kiosk in places like Walmart or Dollar General, and selling it right on the spot.
You put your device in the Eco-ATM, then wait for an offer. If you decide to sell, you can get paid instantly.
However, before you sell or trade in anything, you have to take certain steps.
“Any time you have in particular a computer or a phone, you have to make sure you wipe them clean,” Howard said.
It’s important to wipe personal devices because many people keep their banking and payment apps and information on their phones or computers.
