McMillan was officially an “interim” coach when he took over for Lloyd Pierce who was fired March 1 as the Hawks were floundering with a 14-20 record.

McMillan was able to change the tone of the team almost immediately, as the Hawks ran off a 27-11 record the rest of the season and grabbed the fifth seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs.
The run continued as the Hawks knocked out New York and top-seeded Philadelphia in the first two rounds of the playoffs before losing to the Milwaukee Bucks 4-2 in their best-of-seven series.

There had been rumors Hawks General Manager Travis Schlenk was prepared to offer McMillan the job once the season ended. Those rumors were apparently true.
