Atlanta, Ga — Atlanta’s next affordable housing project is under construction in the historic Sweet Auburn neighborhood.
Atlanta has made affordable living a priority and has a goal of having 20,000 affordable homes by 2026.
Channel Two’s Kristen Holloway attended Wednesday’s groundbreaking on historic Auburn Ave.
Cheneé Joseph, President and CEO of Historic District Development Corporation, says the development is another step in revitalizing the historic neighborhood.
“You’re looking at not just affordable housing but affordable commercial space, community gardens, how does the neighborhood feed itself and at the end of the day… having the opportunity for our community and city to participate in bringing back the revitalization of Sweet Auburn.”

Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens, who promised to build more affordable housing during his campaign, was on hand at the introduction of the complex on Wednesday.
“Giving people the opportunity to live in the city that they work in, and we’re on our way,” Dickens said. “Already in the first six months of my administration, we cut ribbons and broke ground on nearly 2,000 units of affordable housing.”

The development will be dedicated to affordability for both residents and commercial-space owners. It will have a rooftop garden to provide fresh produce to the tenants and the community.
The complex will have 37 co-living apartment units with retail and commercial space on the ground floor.
Joseph told Channel 2 that the city has $500,000 worth of projects in development or under construction, and Front Porch is just the beginning.
