Having trouble keeping up with your mortgage payments? There may be a solution.

Georgia Congressman David Scott said that during the recession, the state started a mortgage assistance program called HomeSafe Georgia to help families stay in their homes.

The program offers homeowners up to $50,000 to help them catch up.

"It is not a loan," Scott said. "It is money that is free and clear. It is again, federal money.

There is still $10 million available, but homeowners must apply before the deadline, which is March 31.

Channel 2′s Linda Stouffer talked to one woman who benefited from the program. Alese Jackson had to fight to hold onto her home in South Fulton County after she lost her job and had to care for an older parent.

"I fell behind in my mortgage, and my friend had told me about HomeSafe Georgia," Jackson said. "I was like, 'Wow, this is really happening.'"

Jackson is now back to work and opens her doors up for friends who need a place to stay.

"I’m blessed to be a blessing," Jackson said.
