ATLANTA — An Atlanta police officer who was hit by an ATV rider and seriously injured during last summer’s riots over the killing of Georgia Floyd has received an award from the department.
Officer Max Brewer suffered extensive injuries to his legs when he was hit by an ATV rider at the intersection of Marietta Street and Turner Street last May.

The Atlanta Police Department presented Brewer with the Purple Heart during a ceremony on Monday, commending him for his strength and bravery as he continues to recover from the incident.
“Despite his long road to recovery, Officer Brewer remains optimistic and continues to show signs of improvement. Officer Brewer, we continue praying for your healing. Your dedication to the Department and commitment to service for our community is second to none,” the department said in a post on its Facebook page.

The ATV rider who hit Brewer was charged with DUI, serious injury by vehicle, reckless driving, possession of marijuana and several other traffic charges.
Police said Brewer was trying to keep protesters from being hit by cars when the ATV hit him.
