Police investigating series of armed robberies; some victims were UGA students

ATHENS, Ga. — The Athens-Clarke Police Department is investigating a series of armed robberies that took place over the weekend.

At least six armed robberies were reported to the department Saturday and Sunday.

Police confirmed to Channel 2 Action News that some of the victims were University of Georgia students. No one was injured.

The first happened just after midnight Saturday when two victims were robbed near the 300 block of Pope Street. The victims told officers two men with guns approached them and stole an undisclosed amount of money from them.

A second robbery happened 30 minutes later in the area of Second Street and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway. The three victims said two men with guns demanded money from them as well.

The last one Saturday happened at 12:40 a.m. in the 300 block of Willow Street. The two victims were also approached by men with guns but nothing was stolen was from them, according to police.

Officers were called out to three more robbery attempts after midnight Sunday.

The first happened at 12:30 a.m. when a victim was approached by a man with a gun near Vine Street and Hillside Street.

The second was 20 minutes later in the area of Fourth Street and Bonnie Lane. A man with a gun demanded money from the victims.

Police said the third attempt happened around 1 a.m. after the victim was approached by a man with a gun near Baxter and Finley streets.

In all three Sunday incidents, nothing was stolen from the victims. Police have not said if any of the armed robbery attempts are connected.
