Arrests made in murder of Morehouse student

ATLANTA — Police said a second man is in custody in connection with killing a Morehouse College student near the Atlanta University Center.

Devin Campbell waived his court appearance Saturday morning at the Fulton County jail. Campbell and Nicolas Ross Smith are facing murder and aggravated assault charges in the death of 23-year-old Joseph Gibbs.

Investigators said Smith shot Gibbs and a second man while they sat in a car at the intersection of Parsons and Webster streets last Thursday. Gibbs' passenger was shot in the hand. A third person ran from the vehicle after the shooting. Detectives believe the shooting was drug-related.

Police said the pair was targeted by Smith and Campbell.

Smith, 20, was taken into custody in Stockbridge on Thursday afternoon, Channel 2's Ryan Young confirmed.

Morehouse President John Wilson sent a letter to students after the shooting about the college's efforts to fight crime along with Atlanta police.

"I am also committed to making sure that we, at Morehouse, do our part to create an environment defined by a high-level of personal responsibility and zero tolerance for violence," Wilson said.
