Alpharetta live-work-play development takes next step

ALPHARETTA, Ga. — A live-work-play development project is closer to reality after the Alpharetta Planning Commission approved a plan for luxury shops, restaurants and apartments to be built off of Old Milton Parkway.

The same people who run Atlantic Station in Midtown Atlanta would build the new complex.

The developer, North American Properties, presented a video animation of the new project, called Avalon, to the Alpharetta Planning Commission.

The community would be built at the old Prospect Park site, an 80-acre field on the northwest corner of Georgia 400 and Old Milton Parkway.

The developer said the project would bring thousands of jobs. So far, he has gotten good feedback from residents and city leaders, including the planning commission, which voted unanimously to move forward with the project.

"It means we are taking the next step to bringing this to fruition to Alpharetta and all of north Fulton," Mark Toro of North American properties said.

The next step means getting the City Council's approval. The developer said Avalon will be different from Atlantic Station in several key ways.

First, the developer said Avalon will have more public spaces, including a plaza the size of a football field, and a 38-foot wide boulevard. North American Properties said Avalon would also have a much smaller residential community, and ever apartment would be above stores -- something the developer said is a first in the southeast.
