67 people need new homes after fire sweeps through apartment complex

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — Dozens of families are in temporary homes Sunday after a fire heavily damaged an apartment building in Lithonia.

And this could not have come at a worse time.

The fire started around 6 p.m. at the Belle Vista Apartments on Camellia Lane in Lithonia.

When firefighters arrived at the scene, they found heavy flames and smoke coming from the third floor.

Firefighters said the fire started in one unit and spread to the roof.

“Most of the damage was to the roof. We had one apartment involved heavily with fire which we were able to take care of that,” said DeKalb County Fire Capt. Dion Bentley.

Thankfully no one was hurt, however the Red Cross is helping 67 people with housing and immediate necessities.

“We haven’t had a big apartment complex fire in a few months now. I’d say a about a month. We’ve had smaller house fires which crews have been able to get in and take care really quickly. Most people are home so most of them have been cooking fires,” Bentley said.

Firefighters are still working to figure out what started this fire.
