$350,000 worth of comic books stolen from shop

MACON, Ga. — Deputies are searching for whoever broke into a Georgia comic shop and stole more than $300,000 worth of rare, vintage comic books.

Four men, dressed in masks and long sleeve shirts pried open the door to Comics Plus, went inside and stole a safe full of the rare comic books.

"We're still calculating the losses. We don't know exactly where it's coming in yet," said store manager Kenneth Messer.

Messer said Wednesday night the thieves stole the first 20 issues of X-Men comics, which may be worth more than $100,000. He says they got the Justice League, too.

"The first eight issues of our Justice League original first print copies were in there, and they're valued at $250,000," Messer said.

Messer says each comic is inside a capsule, and they're only valuable to comic book store.

Investigators said they had no idea comics could be worth so much.

"Never did. Never did. That's just like, I guess, you saved baseball cards but you never thought they'd be expensive, but yeah, you never think something like a comic book would be worth so much," said Randy Gonzalez, with the Bibb County Sheriff's Office.

Messer appreciates the investigators, but wouldn't mind a little superhero help, too.

"Batman would be good. Batman would be good, but unfortunately, he's got bigger problems these days with Superman out there than deal with local comic problems," Messer said.
