2 dead in Douglas County house fire

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ga. — Investigators are working to find out what sparked a deadly house fire in Douglas County.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Department told Channel 2’s Richard Elliot that the fire was reported around 6:30 a.m. Friday at a home on Villa Lane.

They found two men dead in the living room inside the single-story house.

“At this time, right now, the Douglas County major case unit and also the fire department investigative unit is working the investigation, and I have no further details at this time,” Lt. Glenn Daniel said.

There was no visible damage to the home. Investigators said it was all inside.

Firefighters were able to rescue two dogs from the house. A neighbor said they found one of the pups underneath the bed.

Two neighbors volunteered to take the dogs in.

"When I was holding her this morning she was, you know, she was shaking and everything else. And I just felt so bad for her. She's been through a lot," said Chase Michael.

Both the sheriff's office and the fire department are investigating, along with the state fire marshal's office, because the fire involved fatalities.

The victims have not yet been identified, but a close friend told us he's known one of the victims for years and he can't believe he's gone.

"Me and him just hung around, talked, and he was a good man. I'm really going to miss him," Johnny Wells said.

Firefighters said foul play is not suspected.
