15 people killed in crashes during Memorial Day weekend in Georgia

ATLANTA — Troopers and local law enforcement said there were 13 fatal traffic crashes resulting in 15 deaths across Georgia during the Memorial Day holiday travel period.

The 78-hour holiday period began Friday, May 22, at 6 p.m. and ended Monday, May 25, at 11:59 p.m.

“The most busy times of travel during the holiday period are usually the afternoon/evening of the first day of the period (Friday) and again on the evening/night of the last day of the holiday period (Monday),” the Georgia State Patrol said.

Statewide, there were a total of 317 crashes with 188 injuries.

In the same period last year, 17 people were killed on Georgia roads over the Memorial Day weekend — a sharp increase from the eight killed the previous year, according to the DPS.

In addition to crash investigations, troopers arrested 317 people for driving under the influence.

There was also one social distancing violation issued in the metro Atlanta.
