Houses Sink Into Ground As Cracks Spread

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga.,None — Houses in a Lithonia neighborhood are sinking into cracks and low spots that have spread across several yards of the subdivision.

"Look at that. I'm sticking my fingers in it," displaced resident Anthony Corley told Channel 2's Jim Strickland, as he stuck his hand into a gap in the ground. "It's not a gopher. There's another one."

The shifting earth is more like terra infirma, and concrete driveways are crumbling in the Lakeshore subdivision.

Corley has abandoned the home. The house next to his is breaking apart as it sinks into the ground.

Neighbors said they're worried the problem may get worse.

"I don't know what's going to happen to me if something go bad at these other houses. It's sort of scary," said neighbor Christine Thompson.

Thompson's home is OK, but the next house over, where her daughter lives, has problems.

Neighbors said they have complained to DeKalb County officials. Strickland contacted officials for any information on a possible solution, but they have not responded to him.

"Something needs to be done," said Thompson.
