Henry Co. residents want dumping ground cleaned up

HENRY COUNTY, Ga.,None — Residents said their Henry County road has become a dumping ground and it's overwhelmed with hundreds of tires and trash.

Neighbors said they've tried to catch the people illegally dumping, but they have a technique in leaving items behind.

As soon as Channel 2's Craig Lucie turned down North Mill Road in Stockbridge, he saw a "No Dumping" sign. But he said it was immediately clear that it was not a deterrent.

"It's disgusting. There's everything from garbage, commodes and furniture. It's bad," resident Rutha Graham told Lucie.

Graham said she's getting tired of people throwing all the trash in her front yard.

"How much would you estimate that you have cleaned up in your own yard?" Lucie asked Graham.

She told him it's not uncommon to take 12 garbage bags to the Dumpster each time she cleans up every few weeks.

The corner of North Mill Road and Speer Road is one of the entrances to the dumping ground. It's also where Graham's children walk every morning.

"It's nasty, and we have to walk our little sister to the bus stop and it brings a lot of dirty attention," said Jason Greer, Graham's young son.

Willy and Annette Starks live down the road from the Grahams, and they are trying to sell their house.

"The dumping -- no one wants to live here," explained Willie Starks.

The Starks said they've called the county and police.

"The police told me just get a tag number and don't try to confront anyone. A lot of times when I come out the door, (the people illegally dumping will) leave, and by the time I get up here you can't see the tag. They speed away," Starks told Lucie.

Lucie called Henry County's spokesman, and he said they would call code enforcement first thing Monday to take a look at North Mill Road.

Residents are hoping they start cleaning it up that morning.
