Police chase ends in violent crash atop Lookout Mountain in north Georgia

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN — A police chase ended in a violent crash Sunday evening on Lookout Mountain.

On Sunday, April 16, 2023 at about 8 p.m. deputies with the sheriff’s office in Dade County, Georgia were notified that deputies from Grundy County, Tennessee were in pursuit of a U-Haul van on Highway 136 coming up Lookout Mountain from Walker County, Georgia.

Dade County deputies responded to Lookout Mountain to join the pursuit and officers with the Trenton Police Department set up spike strips at the base of Lookout Mountain on Highway 136.

At the top of the mountain, the driver continued straight in a hard right turn, struck concrete barriers, and flipped the van over into the trees.

Deputies were able to remove the trapped driver from the heavily damaged van and turned him over to EMS.

The driver, Barry May of Waukegan, Illinois, was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

May had an active warrant out of Illinois and charges related to this chase are pending.

May was the only person injured in the chase and the U-Haul van was the only vehicle damaged during the pursuit.
