Fire officials inspecting Pinova Plant fire site, chemical tanks remained intact during fire

BRUNSWICK, Ga. — Fire officials are inspecting the site of the Pinova Plant fire in Brunswick a day after the fire caused nearby residents to shelter in place.

The Environmental Protection Agency distributed air monitors around the perimeter of the plant to test air quality after the fire.

Seven monitors ran overnight and no levels were registered to cause public safety concerns.

Evacuation and shelter in place orders were lifted at 10 p.m. Saturday and the City of Brunswick state of emergency was lifted at 8 a.m. Sunday.

About 30 people stayed in a shelter organized by the American Red Cross overnight.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

The Glynn County Sheriff’s Office said damage to the plant was limited to some structures, but chemical tanks remained intact.

Only two people were injured during the fire.

The victims were treated for minor burns by paramedics onsite.

“I am so proud of our First Responder community,” said Brunswick City Fire Department Chief Tim White. “This was a Mutual Aid operation; we had every resource on hand and available to us. The response was fast, and I cannot say enough about this community.”

About a dozen fire departments, police departments, and other agencies responded to the blaze.
