As the semi crossed the southbound lanes of the interstate, it busted through the guardrails into the northbound lanes, causing four more vehicles to crash, according to Action News Jax.

The driver of the semi has been identified as Nicholas Burist, 43, of Newport News, Virginia.

Charles Davenport, 37, and Michael Hines, 36, who were in Burist’s semi, died. Jamie Sloan, 43, and Rylie Sloan, 14, both of Woodruff, South Carolina also died in the crash.

Burist told authorities he was being tailgated, and when the car in front of him slammed on its brakes, he snatched the wheel to the left and lost control of the semi.

But according to the report, onboard dashcam video from the semi showed that no one was directly in front of Burist at the time and that the SUV in front of him was not hitting its breaks.

Another driver told investigators he was hit by a “semi out of nowhere,” while other drivers involved said they weren’t able to avoid the semi once it breached the guardrails, according to Action News Jax.

Burist was arrested on July 7 by the Camden County Sheriff’s Office.

Jail records show he has multiple charges, including attempted vehicular homicide, possession of drugs or alcohol while on duty, possession of an open container and following too closely.

Burist is being held in the Camden County Jail on a $30,000 bond.
