Funeral Arrangements Set For Slain Trooper

ATLANTA,None — Funeral arrangements have been set for a Georgia State trooper killed during a traffic stop late Monday night.

Visitation is scheduled from 2 to 4 p.m. Thursday at Mayes Ward-Dobbins Funeral Home, 180 Church St. in Marietta. A second visitation is scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m.

A funeral service will be held Friday at Roswell Street Baptist Church, also in Marietta. The service is set to begin at 1 p.m.

Meanwhile, Fulton County court officials are reviewing the case of the man accused in the shooting death of Trooper Chadwick LeCroy, 38, of Marietta. Officials said 30-year-old Gregory Favors had been released from jail several times this year despite concerns from pretrial officers.

Court records show Gregory Favors had been arrested three times this year on charges of fleeing police, and each time he was granted bond even though a pretrial services officer had recommended against it.

Favors was scheduled to face a judge Wednesday to answer to murder charges, but he waived his court appearance.

Police said Favors shot and killed LeCroy on Monday night after an attempted traffic stop escalated into a car chase and crash.

LeCroy tried to stop Favors on Bolton Road because of a broken headlight. Investigators said Favors refused to stop.

A short chase ensued, ending with Favors crashing the 2007 Mazda he was driving at the intersection of St. Paul Avenue and Hightower Road in northwest Atlanta.

When LeCroy approached the car, Favors began fighting with him, police said.

"Shots were fired. Our trooper was struck multiple times and is deceased because of those wounds," said Maj. Mark McDonough of the Georgia State Patrol. Officials said LeCroy was shot twice in the face and died while being taken to Grady Memorial Hospital.

Investigators said that after the shooting, Favors jumped into the trooper's squad car and ditched it several blocks away near Gun Club Drive.

Not far from the scene, Georgia Bureau of Investigation agents found a gun, believed to be the one used in the slaying, on top of an apartment building roof.

Atlanta police, with the assistance of Cobb County police, took Favors into custody the same night.

Channel 2 Action News reporter Eric Philips caught up with a relative of Favors who apologized to LeCroy's family.

LeCroy was stationed at Post 48 in Atlanta and belonged to the Criminal Suppression Unit.

LeCroy is the first trooper to be killed by gunfire in 35 years and the 27th Georgia State trooper to be killed in the line of duty, officials said.

LeCroy leaves behind a wife and two sons.
