Food Fights Shut Cafeteria At Gwinnett School

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga.,None — Students of Berkmar High School will be forced to eat their lunch inside their classrooms instead of the cafeteria until Feb 26, said Principal Ken Johnson.

"Students will be served lunch in their fifth-period classrooms until this Friday, Feb, 26. All students will have the option to receive a balanced meal, just as they do when we serve lunch in the cafeteria, only with a reduced number of choices," said Johnson.

Johnson said the suspension was in response to a spike in food fights in the last few weeks.

"Due to the number of students in the cafeteria each day, and the willingness of a few of those students to misbehave in this manner, the privilege of going to the cafeteria and eating lunch is suspended," Johnson said.

Johnson sent a letter to parents explaining why the students' lunch will now be served inside their classrooms instead of the cafeteria.

"The administration understands this may be unfair to the vast majority of students who conduct themselves appropriately. It is also unfair to faculty & staff members. This action is being taken in an effort to regain proper decorum in our school cafeteria before someone is injured; the primary concern is safety," Johnson said.
