Fire at kennel kills dozens of dogs

FLOYD COUNTY, Ga.,None — A fast-moving fire at a Floyd County kennel Tuesday afternoon killed 32 dogs, 20 of them puppies.

"It's been pretty rough," Flashpoint Kennel owner Linda Nash said. "We just feel bad that we couldn't get them all out."

Nash and her friend, Brandi Ely, said they saw flames shooting out of a ceiling heater in the kennel area, which was next to her home off Fox Hill Drive.

Ely rushed in to try to save the animals but was quickly overcome by the smoke. She narrowly escaped with her life. She was treated at a local hospital for smoke inhalation.

"All I worried about was the puppies," Ely said. "I feel like if I could've stayed a little bit longer I could've maybe saved some, but everybody tells me there was no way. I was in danger myself."

"We were both going to try to get the dogs out," Nash said. "Within seconds, the smoke was so bad you couldn't even see in front of you."

The fire destroyed both the kennel area and her mobile home. Most of the canine victims were Jack Russell terriers, Boston terriers and Chihuahuas.

About three dozen dogs did survive at a nearby kennel. She now plans to adopt all of her remaining Jack Russell terriers.

Nash said she had insurance on the home but not the animals. She doesn't think she has the heart to rebuild and raise dogs again.

"I don't care about the home," Nash said. "I mean, it's just hard not being able to get them out."
