I-85 reopens after fatal crash

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — The northbound lanes of Interstate 85 have reopened after a deadly crash near Interstate 285 at Spaghetti Junction Wednesday morning.

The Georgia Department of Transportation said a truck driver was killed in a crash involving multiple tractor-trailers.

“The impact was dramatic, that one tractor trailer actually split another tractor trailer in half. So looking at it from the rear, it appears there were three tractor trailer involved, but there was only two,” said DeKalb Fire Rescue Capt. Eric Jackson.

Police said a Millis Transfer truck lost control coming off I-285 west, and jackknifed on I-85. Just at that moment, another tractor trailer, a JB Hunt truck, was headed north on I-85 and couldn't stop in time and crashed into the jackknifed truck.

The impact sliced the Millis Transfer truck in half and crushed the cab of the JB Hunt truck, killing the driver, identified as 33-year-old Corey Hart of Lithia Springs.

The cab was so crushed that investigators had to transfer the entire structure to the Medical Examiner’s Office.

The driver of the other truck is OK and recovering at a hospital.

The accident is still under investigation.
