GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — As they prepare for the worst, losing their home this weekend, they wonder – “Where is all the money going?”
ALS, or Lou Gehrig's Disease, has devastated 43-year-old Aubrey Mohabeer physically, and now, his family could soon lose its home on Safehaven Drive in Gwinnett County.
The viral videos of the ice bucket challenge became a craze this summer. Millions of dollars were raised, mainly for research.
“When we saw that big outpouring with everybody we were so excited. Aubrey cried so many times,” Karla Mohabeer said.
Karla Mohabeer says despite all the fundraising, now that she and her four children are about to lose their home, she's struggling to find help. Aubrey Mohabeer’s health has been declining for three years. He's now in a care facility. The disease and care have left the family financially drained.
“If things were stable in our home, he'd be home with me,” Karla Mohabeer said.
The Georgia chapter of the ALS Association says its leadership is meeting next week to determine funding for next year. It plans on using some of the money raised in the ice bucket challenges for family grants, but those wont' be available until next year. The group has been trying to find resources for the Mohabeers.
Our core mission is and has always been to work toward a treatment and cure for ALS. An integral part of that mission consists of helping patients and their families and we're grateful the Ice Bucket Challenge has enabled our organization to enhance and expand our programs and services. We're continuing to work with the Mohabeer family and remain committed to serve all the other families in Georgia to help them with the challenges they face.
We will continue to coordinate with local and state agencies to ensure the Mohabeer family gets the assistance they need.
“All these millions of dollars and they aren't helping us, and I'm sure there are many other families going through this,” she said.
The Lilburn Co Op was able to offer some money Wednesday, but it may not be enough. The family has until the end of the month.
