DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — Nearly two dozen dogs rescued from a puppy mill in Tennessee are getting medical help in metro Atlanta and will soon be available for adoption.
PAWS Atlanta, an animal rescue group, took in 20 dogs over the weekend and immediately put the animals in medical isolation at their DeKalb County facility.

PAWS Atlanta director of operations Tara Mitchell said some animals had severely matted fur and had never been out of small wire cages.

"These puppies and dogs have never seen sunlight. They've never walked on grass," Mitchell told Channel 2's Tony Thomas.
The U.S. Humane society posted video of last week's puppy mill raid on its website. Officials said they collected 97 dogs and one cat from a large building near Lewisburg, Tenn.
The animals were strictly used for breeding, officials told Thomas.
"All of the dogs are timid and really scared. They are underweight. There are several types of medical issues," said Mitchell.
"The conditions these animals were kept in were deplorable. They were beyond animal abuse," Mitchell added.
Mitchell said it was unclear when these dogs would be available for adoption.
