DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — A 19-year veteran of the DeKalb County Police Department seriously injured in a crash last month has been discharged from the Shepherd Center.
Officer Daniel LaCoste was checking on a wreck on Interstate 20 when he was struck by a passing car. He sustained a brain injury as a result, but was discharged from rehab Tuesday morning.
LaCoste was led home with his family on his side. His brother, Jason, said drivers should learn a lesson from his injury.
"Someone wasn't paying attention. We have all been there before. Take care of each other," he said.
LaCoste has vocalized his support for the Move Over law since his injury. He broke his leg in two places and fractured his skull in the crash. Witnesses said he was wearing a wearing a reflective vest, so his family can't understand why it happened.
"Give them a lane. Give them a lane. Protect them. They protect us," Jason LaCoste said.
