Cobb Football Star Killed In Murder-Suicide

POWDER SPRINGS, Ga.,None — McEachern High School football star Rajaan Bennett, who signed last month to play for Vanderbilt, was killed in a murder-suicide at a home in Cobb County early Thursday morning, according to police.

Powder Springs police said Clifton O'Neal Steger, 39 shot and killed himself after fatally shooting Bennett, 18.

Steger was an ex-boyfriend of Bennett's mother, according to investigators.

Officials said Taiwan Hunter, 32, was also wounded and taken to Atlanta Medical Center. Hunter is Rajaan Bennett's uncle. A hospital representative said Hunter is listed in serious condition.

Friends of Bennett set up a Facebook page to post messages about his death.

Channel 2 Action News reporter Mike Petchenik spoke to the Powder Springs police chief who said police got a 911 call from a house in the 4200 block of Woodcrest Drive about 2:30 a.m. The caller was whispering and asking for help, according to police.

When officers arrived at the house, they heard shots, according to Major Charles Spann of the Powder Springs Police Department.

"When they knock on the door they hear the shots inside and they, of course, take cover," said Spann. "As they moved back, two people emerged from the house hysterical."

When Powder Springs officers and the Cobb County SWAT team entered the house they found Steger and Bennett dead.

Several children in the home were unharmed.
