ATLANTA,None — With college costs going up faster than the rate of inflation, students are looking everywhere for scholarships. It's not all about grades these days. You can get money for some pretty strange reasons. Channel 2 Action News consumer advisor Clark Howard shows you some strange scholarships.
Zach Solomon is one busy teenager. He's busy with college applications and he's looking hard for scholarships -- and he's found some weird ones.
"Well, there's one for being tall, which I think is really weird," said Solomon.
It's true. It's the Tall Club's International Scholarship. You can get $1,000 but, among other things, you need to meet the height requirement: 5 feet 10 inches for women and 6 feet 2 inches for men.
"The one that I'm working on right now is the Oh! The Places You'll Go from the Dr. Seuss Fund. You write an essay. I like it a lot," said Solomon. First place for the scholarship is $5,000.
Another scholarship being offered is a $2,000 scholarship to the person who wins a duck-calling contest. You have to go to Arkansas to compete.
Got milk? If you're an athlete and you're willing to wear a milk mustache, you could win the Sammy Award and get $7,500 for college. Sammy stands for Scholar Athlete Milk Mustache of the Year.
If you're willing to make an outfit from duct tape and wear it to prom, you could win the Duct Tape's Stuck At Prom scholarship. "The top prize is $3,000 but the pictures? Priceless," said Clark.
Your name could also be your ticket to college savings. If your last name is Gatling and you're going to North Carolina State, you could get up to $18,000.
"I'm not kidding when I tell you that getting a scholarship isn't at all like it used to be," said Clark. "In fact, they get weirder and weirder. How about this? Getting a scholarship for making your own videos. Lots of people will like doing that. You're not going to believe how many sources for cash you might scrounge up."
