Atlanta voters to decide on Sunday sales measure

ATLANTA,None — You will now have the final say on whether alcohol sales should be allowed in Atlanta on Sundays.

City council members passed a measure that will put the Sunday alcohol sales on the ballot.

It’s a decision that some say makes sense.

“A lot of events go down on a Sunday, and every time Sunday rolls around, all the stores are closed. I think it’s great!” said John Mooring.

The city council’s decision comes four months after Gov. Nathan Deal signed Senate Bill 10, which allows local communities to decide if stores like Camp Creek World of Beverages on Princeton Lakes Parkway can be open on a Sunday.

Georgia is currently only one of three states that ban alcohol sales on one day a week.

Anthony Coppage told Channel 2 Action News reporter Craig Lucie that adding a day will help the local economy.

“Sunday will just be another day to make money,” said Coppage.

Atlanta is now one of biggest cities where the voters will decide where that money will be spent.

Some are already against the liquor sales decision being placed on the ballot.

“It’s just one day out of the week where we shouldn’t be able to buy alcohol. That’s just how I feel,” said Shawn Armour.

Several local politicians have also spoken out against changing the liquor law, saying that one more day would lead to more alcohol-related deaths and injuries on highways.

The ordinance has been sent to Mayor Kasim Reed for his consideration.
