Ammonia Leak Forces Bakery Evacuation

ATLANTA,None — An ammonia spill forced an evacuation at an Atlanta bakery early Tuesday.

The spill happened at the Schwan Bakery on Lemon Lane in northeast Atlanta. The bakery makes pies and desserts.

Atlanta fire Asst. Chief Ken Byers said the system used to freeze pies sprung a leak shortly before 1 a.m.

Firefighters finished mopping up the leak around 5:30 a.m., but employees were still being kept at bay. In addition to the evacuation, La France Street was blocked between Arizona and Oakdale avenues.

Byers said the ammonia levels had returned to a safe level. No one in the neighborhood was evacuated.
