DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — An accused serial rapist appeared before a DeKalb County judge Wednesday and was denied bond.
Sylvester Antonio Ray is accused of kidnapping four women and raping them between 2002 and 2003 in the Glenwood area.
Ray's lawyers were asking for a $100,000 bond. Channel 2 Action News reporter Mike Petchenik was in the courtroom when the judge said he believed Ray was a flight risk and at risk to reoffend. The judge then denied bond.
The rapes of the four women were initially thought to be unrelated, but the Georgia Bureau of Investigation eventually linked them together through DNA evidence, GBI officials said. Officials said the same DNA evidence led them to Ray.
GBI agents said Ray had just been released from federal prison on a gun charge when he was arrested on the rape charges.
Ray's sister told Petchenik last week that she does not believe police have enough evidence to convict. She said she believes the prosecutor is trumping up the charges in order to get funding for a cold case squad.
