30 puppies rescued from alleged puppy mill up for adoption

ATLANTA — The Atlanta Humane Society helped rescue nearly 200 animals from an alleged puppy mill in north Mississippi.

Thirty of the rescued dogs were transported to the Atlanta Humane Society Saturday for medical treatment and to be adopted.

As of Saturday evening, all the puppies were inside the midtown location on Howell Mill Road. Half of the puppies will be moved to the Alpharetta location where they will be adopted out.

Veterinarian Dr. Gloria Dorsey says they have a lot of work to do to get the puppies in good, adoptable condition.

The 30 rescued dogs came from a pack of 123 puppies that were rescued from two locations in north Mississippi.

An experienced operation team from the Atlanta Humane Society assisted in the rescue in Alcorn County, Mississippi.

The Humane Society says the dogs were kept in “filthy, cramped conditions and repeatedly bred for profit.”

“One dog was housed in a situation with its deceased companion,” said Dorsey.

She told Channel 2’s Liz Artz the dogs were living in feces, squalor and without enough food or water.

"(They were in) chicken-wire caging confinement areas without the ability to exercise or be exposed to sunlight,’ said Dorsey.

The dogs will be groomed, fed, and examined before being put up for adoption. Dorsey thinks it'll take seven to 10 days to get the puppies vetted and ready for homes.

“(First, they need to) get their bearings because they’ve been taken out of most unfortunate circumstances,” said Dorsey

Fifty-four other animals were also rescued from the alleged mill. An investigation is underway and police say animal cruelty charges are likely.

Dorsey told us many of these puppies were being sold at flea markets.

The dogs up for adoption are four Italian greyhounds, two schnauzers, two Pomeranians, one Lhasa apso, five shih tzus, four Yorkshire terriers, three Boston terriers, and nine poodles.

You can find information on how to adopt the puppies and when they will be available on the Atlanta Humane Society website and on their Facebook page.
