A Tesla was driving on Highway 1 at Devil’s Slide when it went off the road and fell an estimated 250 feet, KNTV reported.

Cal Fire said it was called to the scene after witnesses saw the accident and called 911. The Tesla landed on the beach below the cliff.

A spokesperson for Cal Fire said in a statement that first responders saw movement in the vehicle using binoculars and immediately called for helicopters to come and lift people out of the vehicle. “We were actually very shocked when we found a survivable victim in the vehicle. So that actually was a hopeful moment for us.”

A spokesperson for Cal Fire told KNTV it was “nothing short of a miracle” that the passengers survived.

A photographer for KGO at the scene said the victims were trapped inside the vehicle for more than an hour as crews worked to safely remove them.

Cal Fire shared videos on Twitter showing helicopters responding to the scene.

As the California Highway Patrol’s helicopter responded by air, firefighters rappelled down the cliff to rescue two children who were inside the vehicle, KRON reported. The children, ages 9 and 4, were taken to a hospital in critical condition. Two adults in the vehicle were also taken to a hospital in critical condition, according to KRON.

“As I’m driving by, I’m like, ‘Wow he’s driving extremely fast to take that exit. You’re not even supposed to be going up that way,’” Robin Johnson, a witness who called 911, told KNTV. “And I can see in my rearview mirror this car that just go over the edge and straight down.”
