Sunshine Mills Inc. has issued a voluntary recall of four varieties of dog food after routine testing determined the presence of salmonella in a random 5-pound bag.
According to the recall notice, no illnesses, injuries or complaints have been reported to date, but the potential contamination was reported to the company by distributor, Fleet Wholesale Supply Co., after the Minnesota Department of Agriculture detected salmonella in the bag of Sprout Sporting Dog Food.
The specific products affected by the recall include:
• Sportsman’s Pride Professional Formula 30/20 Dog Food: 40-pound bags distributed in Mississippi, Florida, Tennessee, Louisiana, Virginia, North Carolina and Texas with a “Best by” date of Oct. 7, 2021, and a UPC code of 7015510184.
• Sprout Sporting Dog Food: 5-pound bags distributed in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, South Dakota and North Dakota with a “Best by” date of Oct. 6, 2021, and a UPC code of 7015505101.
• Sprout Sporting Dog Food: 40-pound bags distributed in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, South Dakota and North Dakota with a “Best by” date of Oct. 6, 2021, and a UPC code of 7015505100.
• Intimidator Chicken & Rice Formula Dog Food 30/20: 16-pound bags distributed in Texas, Mississippi, Florida and Alabama with a “Best by” date of Oct. 6, 2021, and a UPC code 7015541002.
• Intimidator Chicken & Rice Formula Dog Food 30/20: 40-pound bags distributed in Texas, Mississippi, Florida and Alabama with a “Best by” date of Oct. 6, 2021, and a UPC code 5216631214.
• FRM Gold Select High Performance Dog Food: 40-pound bags distributed in Georgia and Florida with a “Best by” date of Oct. 6, 2021, and a UPC code of 1549905873.
In addition to sickening pets who eat the potentially tainted food, salmonella can also sicken humans who handle contaminated products, especially those who fail to thoroughly wash their hands after having contact with the products or any surfaces exposed to those products, the recall notice stated.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, common symptoms associated with salmonella in humans include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. Serious, but rare, complications can include arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation and urinary tract symptoms. Meanwhile, pets with salmonella infections may exhibit lethargy or experience diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever and vomiting. Lesser symptoms can include decreased appetite and abdominal pain.
Owners who suspect their pets may have consumed a recalled product are advised to contact their veterinarians immediately.
Consumers who have purchased the recalled products should discontinue use of the products immediately and may return the unused portion to the place of purchase for a full refund.
