NC elementary school teacher dies in classroom

MORGANTON, N.C. — A North Carolina elementary teacher died in her classroom Wednesday morning, school officials said.

Cindy Grindstaff, 50, a fifth-grade teacher at W.A. Young Elementary, died at the school, The News Herald of Morganton reported.

There were no students in the classroom or being taught through Zoom sessions, as the Burke County school system was observing a professional staff development day, according to the newspaper reported.

Grindstaff had been employed with the school system since August 2002, the News Herald reported.

Burke County Public Schools Superintendent Larry Putnam sent an email to staff members Wednesday.

“It is with a heavy heart that I share with you some sad news,” Putnam wrote. “This morning at W.A. Young Elementary, Ms. Cindy Grindstaff, 5th-grade teacher, unexpectedly passed away in her classroom. I ask that you keep Cindy’s sister, Tracy Poole, 5th-grade teacher at Hildebran, and her family in your prayers. Arrangements will be forthcoming.”
