Snellville Officer Loses Leg, Hopes To Return To Force

SNELLVILLE, Ga. — A Snellville police sergeant has undergone yet another major surgery, after a motorcycle accident that forced doctors to amputate his leg.

Sgt. Ray Gunter and his wife were injured on Sept. 14, on Scenic Highway near Wisteria Drive.

Police Chief Roy Whitehead told Channel 2's Manuel Bojorquez that the sergeant and his wife were on his personal motorcycle, leaving a police explorer's event.

A driver making a left turn clipped the motorcycle, knocking them both off and leaving them with serious leg injuries. The driver of the car was cited.

"Well, it's been extremely difficult for all of our people because they're so close," said Whitehead.

Whitehead says Sgt. Gunter plans to return to the force.

"At this point, we're hoping that with the strides medicine has made and the technological advances in prosthetics, he'll be able to return to active duty," said the chief. "But certainly, that's a long way down the road. He's got a lot of recuperation and rehabilitation."

Sgt. Gunter is assistant commander of investigations at the department, and has worked on numerous high-profile cases.

As Sgt. Gunter and his wife recover, the community is rallying support -- both financially and emotionally. Fundraisers are planned, including a golf tournament next Monday.

Those who would like to help the sergeant and his family can contact the Snellville Citizen's Police Academy Alumni.
