David Wayne Stone Jr.

SNELLVILLE, Ga.,None — Investigators with the Gwinnett County Fire Department have arrested a Snellville man in connection to a fire that broke out at the Zoar United Methodist Church Friday morning.

David Wayne Stone Jr., 23, has been charged with intentionally setting fire to the church along with burglary and several other charges.

Firefighters were called to the church near Centerville Highway around 12:30 a.m. Friday. Gwinnett Fire Capt. Tommy Rutledge said an alarm inside the church's gymnasium alerted them.

Rutledge said the fire was small and caused minimal smoke and water damage to the kitchen area of the gymnasium.

Stone admitted to unlawfully entering the church and setting the fire, during an interview with fire investigators.

"The Fire Department takes the crime of arson serious and we are fortunate to have made an arrest so quickly," Rutledge said.

Stone is currently being held in the Gwinnett County Jail.

Investigators have not released a motive behind the fire.
