Penske Shooting Suspect Pleads Not Guilty

KENNESAW, Ga. — A former employee accused of going on a deadly shooting spree at a Kennesaw Penske Truck Rental & Leasing shop has pleaded not guilty, according to Channel 2 Action News reporter Ross Cavitt, who attended the court hearing Friday.

As a prosecutor read through the 16-count indictment against Jesse James Warren, relatives of the victims killed during the workplace shooting wept in the courtroom. Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty for Warren, 60, of Temple, Ga.

Warren's lawyers plan to file hundreds of motions in this case, and round up mental health experts to present their defense.

"Well it always makes a big difference ... the state of the mind of the person," said defense attorney Jimmy Berry.

Authorities said Warren dressed in camouflage when he ambushed Penske workers in January, killing Robert Gonzalez, 31, of Dallas; Van Springer, 59, of Woodstock; and Jaider Marulanda, 43, of Lawrenceville. Two other people were wounded. Four of the victims were Penske employees, except for Marvlanda, who was a truck driver for a local food distributor that is a Penske customer.

All of the victims were in a warehouse section of the business when they were shot, police said.

Penske spokesman, Randy Ryerson, said Warren was a former employee of the Penske business. Investigators said that Warren had been let by go the company.
