Missing Money Leads To Courthouse Probe

HALL COUNTY, Ga. — Officials with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation want to know if a former Hall County employee stole money.

A Channel 2 viewer tipped us off about the investigation.

The woman worked at the Hall County Courthouse in the Traffic Violations Bureau for years. It was her job to collect traffic ticket fines.

The Superior Court Clerk told Channel 2's Erica Byfield that the woman worked for the county for about 24 years.

No one with knowledge of the investigation was willing to say how much money is missing.

A GBI spokesman said a supervisor in the courthouse noticed the missing money.

"Their feeling is possibly an employee took it and that is a criminal violation," said GBI spokesman John Bankhead.

Channel 2 requested interviews with the Hall County district attorney and her former boss, the Superior Court Clerk, but they both declined.

Off camera, the Superior Court Clerk told Byfield that the woman no longer works for the county. He said she was let go for violating an office policy.

Channel 2 is not naming the woman because she has yet to be charged with a crime.
