You could qualify for thousands of dollars in child care help in Georgia

ATLANTA — Georgia has $300 million available to help families with child care -- but they need help giving it away.

The Child and Parent Services (CAPS) child care assistance program offers millions of dollars in subsidies for qualifying student parents.

The only requirement to qualify for the program is that you have to be enrolled in higher education, cosmetology school, a barber program or a technical college.

Channel 2′s Dave Huddleston talked to one metro Atlanta woman who benefitted from the program.

Meghan McBride got pregnant with her son when she was just 14 years old. She dropped out of school when she was 15 years old, but knew that she wanted to make her son proud and prove she could still do something with her life.

“I wanted to be an administrative assistant,” McBride said. “You know, work in an office.”

But for McBride, paying for school and child care was impossible.

“Had it not been for CAPS, I would not have been able to put my children in child care,” McBride said.

McBride got off the program, got a good job and stayed in school. She went on to graduate with a Ph.D. McBride now works at Georgia Piedmont Technical College as the Vice President of Adult Education.

“You can still overcome and still be high-functioning,” McBride said. “You can still be self-sufficient and be a role model even if you had to do things a little differently.”
