Woman robbed at MARTA bus stop in Hapeville

SOUTH FULTON COUNTY, Ga. — For the third time in recent weeks, a gunman robbed a MARTA passenger waiting at a bus stop.

The latest incident happened along Dogwood Drive in Hapeville.

Thursday, the victim talked to Channel 2's Diana Davis.

Dozens of MARTA buses run up and down Dogwood Drive between Metropolitan and Mount Zion Parkway.

Wednesday morning, just before 7 a.m., Dawn Gary was waiting at her usual stop headed for work. That's when she says she saw a young man walking up the street toward her.  She thought he'd keep going but he didn't.

"He got to my side; he grabbed my purse. I kind of went to scream, and then he put a gun into my neck," Gary said.

She heard about the two recent armed robberies at MARTA bus stops – one in which a woman was shot to death.

"I watch the news all the time. So I knew where the young lady got killed and heard about the young guy a couple of weeks ago," Gary said.

Gary said man who robbed her was wearing a hoodie, so she didn't get a good look at his face and could give police only a vague description.

"I think he was young. He walked like a young guy; sounded like a young guy; late teens, early 20s. He had on a dark hoodie and khaki pants," she said of the suspect, who she believes is African American.

She always tries to keep a close eye on her surroundings, but at that time of morning she says it's still dark and hard to see.

"There's no light here. I mean, a lot of times you actually have to flag the bus down because they don't even see you; that's how dark it is," Gary said.

The gunman got away with only a small amount of cash, her old phone, her ID and keys. She's changed the locks. She says what scares her is the thought of having to come back again Monday morning for work. She doesn't drive.

Due to the holiday, no one from MARTA or the Atlanta police was able to speak to Davis, but Gary said she's filed a police report.
