GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — Gwinnett authorities have alerted Channel 2 Action News about a sexual assault that occurred on the Georgia Gwinnett College campus in Lawrenceville.
The incident happened between Sept. 9 at 11:45 p.m. and Sept. 10 at 2:45 a.m. in the B parking lot of the college. The area is southwest of the residence halls complex, campus safety officials said.
The victim said she was returning to her car when she was attacked from behind and pushed into her car where the sexual assault took place. She said the man then fled on foot.
Authorities said the man they are looking for is described as a light-skinned black man, with a muscular build and wearing white shorts at the time of the assault.
They told Channel 2's Kerry Kavanaugh the parking lot attack is unrelated to another attack that happened in a campus residence. Investigators have arrested Nurin Mohamed Ahmed, who faces crimal trespassing charges in that case. He is not a GGC student.
Some students said they were devastated to learn about the incidents on campus.
"Depressed it was really saddening," Stephanie McAllister said.
"It really scared me," added Krystal Martinez.
The incidents make the first time in the school's six-year history campus police are investigating two cases of sexual assault.
GGC spokeswoman Jennifer Stephens said the assaults happened less than 24 hours from each other.
"The patrols have increased. Our resident staff (is) definitely on heightened alert. We encourage residents to use our escort service if they have any concerns at all," she said.
Kavanaugh found students like Kiayana Cox walking in pairs.
"They wouldn't let me walk to class by myself and we stick together," she said.
"We're just trying to stay together and not trying leave each other," Martinez added.
Authorities are asking anyone with information about the parking lot attack to notify Georgia Gwinnett College campus safety at 678-407-5333. Callers can remain anonymous.
