GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — Seasonal changes are affecting Metro Atlanta area drinking water, impacting the taste and odor of drinking water.
Gwinnett County addressed concerns that customers may be having about the changes in their water.

Despite those changes, the water continues to meet all state and federal drinking water standards, according to the water system.
The reason for the change is due to Geosmin and 2-Methylisoborneol, otherwise known as MIB.
Those two elements are natural and give water an earthy taste and odor. Certain times of the year, seasonal changes impact water.

The processing used for drinking water typically treats the taste and odor issues when they are present at low levels. At certain times of the year, levels of these natural compounds are at their highest.
Gwinnett County posted a statement on the county’s website to assure customers the water is treated and tested around the clock to ensure its quality and safety. Officials said lake and drinking water are closely monitored.
