ATHENS, Ga. — University of Georgia football fans lined up outside an Athens Waffle House Wednesday to receive a free meal after their big weekend win over Auburn this past weekend.
The Waffle House on West Clayton Street in Athens is providing free waffles, coffee and hash browns all day as payment for the 2014 Waffle House Waffle Wager.
Three Waffle House suppliers placed a friendly bet on the Georgia-Auburn football game Saturday. The payment was a free day of meals at the Waffle House in the winning team’s city.
The Bulldogs beat the Tigers 34-7 on Saturday night in Sanford Stadium. As a result, UGA fans won waffles, hash browns, and coffee for 24 hours. The free food started at 7 a.m. Wednesday and continues through 7 a.m. Thursday.
Photos from the Waffle House show Royal Cup Coffee’s chairman of the board Bill Smith Jr., a loyal Auburn fan, serving hot coffee to the fans.
The suppliers, Basic American Foods, C.H. Guenther & Son, Inc., and Royal Cup, Inc., are also donating $15,000 to the University of Georgia’s general scholarship fund.
The Waffle Wager was started last year with a bet on the Alabama vs. Texas A&M game. After Alabama’s win, C.H. Gunther provided nearly 2,000 free waffles and 1,500 cups of free coffee to Alabama students.
